Works in every browser
Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox, including private windows. Halt uses the same browser settings that schools and companies use, so there is no extension to remove.
For Windows 10 & 11 · free beta in December
Halt blocks the websites, apps and games you waste time on, in every browser on your PC. You choose how long the block lasts and how hard it is to stop early.
We'll only email you about the beta and the launch.

You're studying. Out of habit, you open a new tab and type a site you blocked, and Halt steps in before the feed loads. You try a game instead, and Halt closes it within 2 seconds.
Cellular respiration turns glucose into ATP, the molecule cells use for energy. It happens in three stages: glycolysis, the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain.
Most of the ATP is made in the last stage, inside the mitochondria. Oxygen is the final electron acceptor, which is why we need to breathe.
Features
Most blockers are easy to turn off the moment you're tempted. With Halt, you decide in advance how hard that should be.
Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox, including private windows. Halt uses the same browser settings that schools and companies use, so there is no extension to remove.
Choose from the apps on your PC, like Steam games, Discord, WhatsApp or Spotify. If you open one during a session, Halt closes it within 2 seconds and tells you why.
With the timer lock, you can't stop until the time is up. The other locks let you stop early after a wait, a long random text, a restart, or a password that a friend keeps.
A small Windows service puts the block back if something removes it. It keeps working after a restart, changing the clock doesn't end it, and you can't uninstall Halt during a session.
Blocks adult sites on the whole PC and locks SafeSearch, using Cloudflare's family filter. To turn it off, you wait out a cool-down that you set in advance.
Set blocks to start on their own, for example every weekday from 9 to 1. They run even when Halt's window is closed.
Adult filter
One switch blocks adult sites in every browser and app, and keeps safe search on. Turning it off takes a cool-down you choose in advance, so a late-night urge passes before anything changes. Or make it permanent, and only Halt support can turn it off early.
Part of Halt Pro. It uses Cloudflare’s family filter, which Cloudflare keeps up to date, and it covers this PC. With Permanent, only Halt support can turn it off early. If you never hear back from us, you can turn it off after 30 days.
Why it's called Halt
Before acting on an urge, ask yourself if you're hungry, angry, lonely or tired. Often the urge comes from one of those, and it fades if you wait. Halt makes you wait.

Who makes Halt
I'm a software engineer, and Halt is my own product. I first built it for myself: every blocker I tried was easy to switch off the moment I got tempted, so I made one that keeps the block in place until the time I set is over.
My background is in embedded software, where programs have to run for months without anyone watching them. I build Halt with the same care, test every release on real Windows PCs, and read every support email and feature request myself.
Windows 10 and Windows 11, 64-bit. There's no Mac or phone version yet.
Halt works only on Windows and costs $29 once, with a free Basic version that includes a lock. It blocks sites through the browsers' own settings instead of extensions, and its adult filter covers the whole PC with safe search locked. Cold Turkey also covers the Mac, and Freedom covers phones. See the side-by-side comparisons, including where they are the better choice.
Only in the way your lock allows. With the timer lock you can't. With the other locks you can, after a wait, a long random text, a restart or a password.
No. Halt has no account and no servers, and your lists, stats and settings stay on your PC. Two outside services are used: site logos come from DuckDuckGo's icon service, and the adult filter uses Cloudflare's family DNS, which sees the website names your PC looks up, like any DNS service.
Browser policies for the sites you block, your network's DNS while the adult filter is on, and one small Windows service. Uninstalling puts all of it back. While a session is running or the adult filter is on, Halt can't be uninstalled, so you can't remove it on impulse.
No. Every 2 seconds the Halt service checks whether a blocked app is open, and once a minute it checks that the block is still in place. Each check takes a tiny fraction of a second.
Yes. An administrator can always undo changes on their own PC. We keep it that way so a bug can never lock you out of your computer. Halt makes giving in slow and annoying, and for most people that is enough.
